A New Chapter: Welcoming the Ferrari F8 Spider

At first glance, it did seem slightly rum for a car such as a Ferrari F8 Spider to arrive on a multi-car transporter.

There was, however, a very good reason for it. The car had come over from Northern Ireland and there was also a Lamborghini Revuelto on board, so combining several deliveries made a great deal of sense and represented a considerable saving.

The F8 itself was not an impulse purchase.

I had already decided that, if I was going to change cars, the next one needed to be a particularly good example of the Ferrari F8 Spider. I have always thought they are drop-dead gorgeous and, being developed from the 488 generation and taking so much of what Ferrari had learned from the 488 Pista, they are very special cars indeed.

My wish list was fairly specific.

It had to be the right specification, preferably built before Covid really began to affect Italian production, it needed sensible mileage and, most importantly, it had to be yellow.

Finding all of those things together is rather more difficult than it sounds.

Good F8 Spiders in the right specification do not appear every day, so when this one came onto the market, I pounced.

And I am very glad I did.

What a car.

In many ways, it marks a bit of a change for me: out with the old and on with the new.

There is a practical reason behind that decision.

For many years I have enjoyed cars that require a fair amount of energy and strength to drive properly. The Mustang and the Allard, for example, are both big V8-powered cars with very heavy steering. They are hugely rewarding, but they demand something from you.

I am no longer in a position to take on serious racing or rallying in the way I once did, so it seemed the right time for those cars to move on and be enjoyed by someone else.

The Maserati falls into a similar category, although I am rather less decisive about that one. Quite simply, I love looking at it, so I am in no particular rush to see it go.

The F8 represents something different. It still delivers all the theatre, performance and sense of occasion you want from a Ferrari, but in a way that suits the sort of motoring I want to enjoy now.

And yellow was always going to help.

So, a new chapter and a rather exciting addition to the garage.
